BIRTH INJURY & TRAUMA

BIRTH INJURY

Birth injury refers to any damage or injury to the child before, during, or immediately after the birthing process. Examples include:

  • Cerebral palsy

  • Brain damage

  • Intrauterine fetal demise

  • Newborn jaundice

  • Vacuum extraction complications 

  • Infant hematoma 

  • Kernicterus

  • Spinal cord injuries

  • Hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy(HIE)


BIRTH TRAUMA

Birth trauma refers specifically to mechanical damage sustained during delivery (such as nerve damage and broken bones). On an average, 29 out of every 1,000 babies in the U.S. suffer some kind of birth trauma. Examples include:

  • Caput Succedaneum

  • Cephalohematoma

  • Bruising and broken bones

  • Subconjunctival Hemorrhage

  • Bell’s Palsy

  • Brachial Plexus Injury

  • Oxygen Deprivation

  • Fractures
